Oatlands

Oatlands is a small town in the center of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is 84 km north of Hobart on Lake Dulverton and 115 km south of Launceston on the Midland Highway (N1). Oatlands is the administrative center of the Local Government Area Southern Midlands Municipality and had a population of 544 at the 2016 census. The city is surrounded by rich farmland.

history

Oatlands is one of the oldest settlements in Tasmania and was named in 1821 by Governor Macquarie after a town in the English county of Surrey . It developed as a military base for the surveillance and organization of convicts because it was halfway between the major cities of Hobart and Launceston. The convicts were loaned out to nearby farms and also worked on public buildings, roads, and bridges.

Most of the Black War ("black war" of the early settlers against the local Aborigines ) took place in the surrounding districts, and Oatlands was home to ex-convict Solomon Blay , Tasmania's most feared executioner .

For a few years after 1848, the Irish nationalist Kevin Izod O'Doherty lived here in exile. His stone farmhouse can still be seen today.

economy

Oatlands was actually a busy city in the 20th century, but in the 1990s it suffered badly from the Tasmanian economic crisis, the bypass along the Midland Highway and the great drought in the Midlands. Most of the recovery in the Tasmanian economy, like the bypass, passed by Oatlands, as well as Ross , Tunbridge, Kempton and soon Pontville , which is much quieter today than it was a few years ago. The residents are striving for further growth by presenting their city as a quiet sub-center with a tourist-friendly image. From the world-famous Oatlands comes Casaveen - knitwear .

railroad

The Oatlands Railway connected the city to Parattah Junction on the main Hobart - Launceston line. The railway line opened on May 13, 1885 and closed on June 10, 1949.

Historic Buildings

Of all the cities in Australia, Oatlands has the largest number of colonial sandstone buildings, many of which were built by convicts. Examples of this are Callington Mill and St. Paul's Church . The mill was built in 1837 and restored to working order in June / July 2010 and the Catholic Church was designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin , the father of neo-Gothic architecture .

The Oatlands Court House is a historic building from the Georgian era. Erected by convicts in 1829, it is the oldest tall courthouse in Australia and the oldest building in Oatlands. It was originally built as a combination of a chapel and a police station. In 1977 it was taken over by the National Trust . There are a total of 87 historical sandstone buildings along the main street, e.g. B. the prison (1835), the warehouse and guard house of the commissariat (1830s) and the officers' quarters (1830s). The aforementioned Callington Mill is the only working example of a Lincolnshire windmill in Australia.
