The area Oberer Neckar is the smallest wine-growing area of the wine-growing region Württemberg and comprises the areas under vines in the Valley of bunting on the southern edge of the beautiful book , as well as in the Neckar around the cities of Tübingen , Rottenburg and Reutlingen . In the past, the Altwuerttemberg vineyards were divided into the Württemberg lowlands and the Oberland, the dividing line being the old Stuttgart Weinsteige . Viticulture in the Upper Neckar area is now carried out on around 30 hectares. The far more extensive and valuable vineyards were owned by the lowlands, which are climatically more favorable. The wines of the Oberland were considered to be of inferior quality and, above all, more acidic. In the Middle Ages, viticulture was one of the main sources of income for the rural population and many times larger. Due to poor harvests, especially due to frost, the livelihood of the local Wengerter, which is popularly known as Gôgen or caterpillars, was very insecure, and they were often threatened by famine. There was talk of caterpillar death when over-indebted Wengerter committed suicide. Around 1800, many emigrated to America or turned to other sources of income. Until the 1970s, viticulture in Tübingen was on the decline and almost completely threatened with extinction. With the amendment to the wine law in 1971, it was disputed whether the vineyards around Tübingen were to be given the rank for quality viticulture at all, but what happened then.

Today's viticulture

Since 1990, however, viticulture has stabilized and, thanks to the striving for quality of the Wengerter, who almost exclusively work as a sideline , experienced a considerable upswing and image gain. Many vineyards were newly laid out in accordance with today's quality criteria and some fallow areas were tilled up again. There is still no vineyard consolidation in the area. Due to global warming, good to very good harvests have been achieved in recent years. In addition, a local viticulture working group was founded to provide further training for part-time farmers. There are no winegrowers' cooperatives in the area, the producers take their marketing into their own hands and sell the wines either openly in the bar in taverns or as bottled wine. The main areas of cultivation are in Wurmlingen (individual vineyards in Wurmlinger Kapellenberg), Tübingen-Hirschau and Tübingen- Unterjesingen and Ammerbuch- Breitenholz . The former vineyards in Herrenberg and Pfullingen have meanwhile fallen victim to development or are used as fruit plots and leisure gardens. Old terrace walls often give an idea of the earlier use as a vineyard .
