The Bergisch Gladbach district of Bensberg is the seat of the Bergisch Gladbach district court , which is responsible for the cities of Bergisch Gladbach, Overath and Rösrath as well as the municipalities of Kürten and Odenthal in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district . Around 196,000 people live in the 298 km² judicial district . The district court of Bergisch Gladbach is also responsible for agricultural matters in the districts of Bergisch Gladbach, Leverkusen and Wermelskirchen.

Bensberg was a regional center in the Duchy of Berg as early as the Middle Ages . In addition to the old Bensberg Castle as the temporary residence of the Counts of Berg, Bensberg was also the seat of the higher court of the Bergisch district of Porz .

The judiciary was reformed during the Napoleonic era. In 1811 the higher court became a peace court , which was responsible for the area of ​​today's cities and communities Bergisch Gladbach, Odenthal and Rösrath. In 1816, the area of ​​today's city of Overath was added by the Lindlar Peace Court . This also remained in the times of the Prussian Rhine Province . In 1879 the Friedensgericht was replaced by the Bensberg District Court due to the new Courts Constitution Act in force in the German Reich .

In 1906 the Bensberg District Court moved into a new building on Gladbacher Straße (The building was demolished in the early 1970s. Location: ⊙ ). Due to the increase in the number of employees, the new building below the Bensberg Castle in Schloßstraße was moved into in 1962 .

After the municipal reorganization in 1975, Bensberg became part of the town of Bergisch Gladbach and thus the name was adapted to the Bergisch Gladbach district court . In the course of this, the municipality of Kürten came from the district court district of Wipperfürth to Bergisch Gladbach.

The building was expanded by two wings in 2004.
