The name of the place is derived from a peeping tower on a Rain, another explanation suggests it as a place lying in Rain, where there were many woodpeckers. Before 1300, the property of the noble von Zulling, including the two farms in Ober Spehtrayn, came to the Duke and since 1386 it was subject to the newly founded Teisbach Regional Court . In 1752 Oberspechtrain consisted of five properties and belonged to the Pirken Obmannschaft and to the Frontenhausen Office of the Teisbach Regional Court.

When the community was formed in 1818/1821, Oberspechtrain became part of the community Weigendorf , with which it came to the community of Loiching on April 1, 1971 as part of the regional reform . Ecclesiastically it was removed from the parish of Loizenkirchen in 2001 and incorporated into the Wendelskirchen branch . In 2013 Oberspechtrain had 85 inhabitants.
