The Donawitz ironworks of voestalpine is the second largest ironworks in Austria after the Linz plant and, at 120 meters, produces the longest railway tracks in the world. The raw materials, such as iron ore, are brought to the plant by rail. The iron ore required comes from Erzberg in Styria and is brought directly to the factory halls by ore trains from the loading point in the city of Eisenerz via Selzthal and Leoben Hauptbahnhof . The trains used to go over the Präbichl , i.e. the Erzbergbahn , and were in Leoben within an hour. Between 1995 and 2003, operations on this line were slowly ceased as it is a very steep standard gauge line. Electrifying the route would be very costly and time-consuming. However, since diesel locomotives do not have the minimum capacity for trains weighing over 1500 tons, the route of the trains was relocated. Now they are avoiding the Präbichl on a large scale.

Leoben-Donawitz is not only home to the iron and steel works , but also voestalpine's new wire rod mill , which is the most modern in the world. It opened on September 26, 2017.

With 23,000 inhabitants, Kapfenberg is the second largest city in Upper Styria after Leoben and is also located in the center of the Upper Styrian industrial area. A new employer is to be created there in the future. The stainless steel plant under construction in Kapfenberg is expected to provide around 3,000 jobs in the future. It is currently considered the most modern steel mill in the world.

In Mürzzuschlag , the north-easternmost town in the Upper Styrian industrial area, is the headquarters of Böhler Bleche GmbH , which loads entire train sets with their sheet metal every day. The wagons are picked up at 1 p.m. and taken to Bruck an der Mur freight station for onward transport.

Another important location of Böhlerwerk GmbH is in Kapfenberg. In 1926 the production of welding wires started. In 1950 a continuous casting plant was built in the Kapfenberg factory and in 1967 the special steel mill was built. In several stages, the location was repeatedly expanded to include modern melting furnaces and material production facilities. In 2003, the capacity was expanded significantly and at the beginning of 2005 Böhler-Uddeholm decided to invest 27 million euros in a second screw press for the forging technology division for the Kapfenberg location.

population

Around 500,000 people live in the Upper Styrian industrial area. The center is Leoben . The city on the Mur has around 26,000 inhabitants and is one of six Styrian university locations. The Montan University Leoben is home to around 4,000 students.

Passenger transport by rail

Around 110,000 people live in the greater Leoben area alone. Accordingly, the city must also be well connected to the Austrian rail network. The Leoben Hauptbahnhof station is the system stop for many international long-distance connections such as Graz - Zurich or Graz - Frankfurt am Main .

Other cities in the Upper Styrian industrial area where long-distance trains stop are Mürzzuschlag , Kapfenberg , Bruck an der Mur , Knittelfeld and Judenburg . The first two are system stops of the hourly long-distance train connections Prague / Vienna - Graz and the latter two of the long-distance connections every 2 hours between Vienna and Villach (Venice). Each of the train connections mentioned stops in Bruck. Each of the above-mentioned train stations is also integrated into the Styrian S-Bahn network.

Freight transport by rail

Due to the many companies and factories, there are many industrial trunk lines in Upper Styria. In Mürzzuschlag alone, several wagon sets are provided, loaded, withdrawn and then brought to the freight station in Bruck an der Mur for further transport . Most of the loaded freight wagons from the Upper Styrian industrial area converge there.

There is a separate marshalling yard in Leoben. It is located in the Göss district and is dominated by timber freight as the station is adjacent to a large sawmill.
