The Ocala Union Station was a train station in long-distance traffic and was last of Amtrak operated. It was located in Ocala , Marion County , Florida .

history

In 1881 the Peninsular Railroad , a subsidiary of the Florida Railroad , opened a railway line from Waldo to Ocala. By the second subsidiary Tropical Florida Railroad , this route was extended in 1882 to Wildwood , 1886 to Plant City and 1890 to Tampa . In 1887, the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad opened a railway line from Ocala to Dunnellon .

The station itself was opened jointly in 1917 by the Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) and Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL), from which the name derives. The companies previously had their own train stations in Ocala, which in turn were each taken over by a previous owner. The ACL took over the Florida Southern Railroad station when it was founded , while the SAL station was originally built by the Florida Transit and Peninsular Railroad .

In 1947, SAL introduced the Silver Star on the line from New York via Ocala to Saint Petersburg . The station and operations were taken over by Amtrak in 1971 . From 1994 to 1995 and from 1996 to 2004 the Silver Star was replaced by the Palmetto passenger train , after which passenger traffic via Ocala was discontinued. Today the section from Jacksonville via Ocala to Lakeland is served by the long-distance buses of Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach .

On December 22, 1997, Union Station was entered on the National Register of Historic Places .
