Octavian Paler

Octavian Paler (born July 2, 1926 in Lisa , Făgăraş County ; † May 7, 2007 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian writer , poet and publicist .

Life

Octavian Paler, from the village of Lisa near Făgăraș , studied philosophy and law at the University of Bucharest . In the 1960s he worked for the Romanian radio and television station Televiziunea Română TVR , most recently as its director. From 1974 to 1979 he was a board member of the Romanian Communist Party . In 1976, under the rule of the communist system, he became chairman of the Association of Journalists. From 1970 to 1983 he was also editor-in-chief of the România Liberă newspaper in Bucharest and from 1980 to 1985 was a member of the Romanian parliament .

Nevertheless, because of his criticism of the personality cult and the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, he was spied on and persecuted by the Securitate , temporarily placed under house arrest and the publication of his texts hindered.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he co-founded the civil rights group for social dialogue with Ana Blandiana and Gabriel Liiceanu . In the last years of his life he has repeatedly denounced the corruption in Romanian politics in his essays and commentaries .

His most famous works are Umbra cuvintelor (shadow word ), Viața pe un peron (life on a platform), Scrisori imaginare (imaginary letters), Rugați-vă să nu vă crească aripi (Pray that you won't grow wings), Don Quixote în est (Don Quixote in the east) and Polemici cordiale (heartfelt polemics).

He died of a heart attack.
