Oda Takeo ( Japanese 小田 嶽夫 , Shinjitai : 小田 岳夫 alternative spelling: 小田 武夫 ; * July 5, 1900 in Takada (today: Jōetsu ), Niigata Prefecture ; † June 2, 1979 ) was a Japanese writer.

Life

Oda was born in Takada, where he also attended Takada Middle School (today: State Takada High School in Niigata Prefecture). After graduating from Tokyo Foreign Language University with a degree in Chinese , he started working for the Japanese Foreign Ministry . As secretary of the ministry he worked a. a. at the consulate in Hangzhou, China (Japanese Kōshū ). On the recommendation of Kurahara Shinjirō he published his first work Budōen ( 葡萄園 , "vineyard") in 1926 .

He decided to quit his job at the State Department in favor of a career as a writer. In 1936, Oda received the Akutagawa Prize for Jōgai ( 城外 ) . With his biography about Lu Xun he also contributed to its spread in Japan. In addition, he influenced with the biography Dazai Osamu's work Saibetsu ( 惜別 ) from 1945, which revolves around a study visit of Lu Xun at the Tohoku University in Sendai .
