Oddo Bergmair OSB (born March 22, 1931 in Kremsmünster as Rudolf Bergmair ; † January 30, 2020 in Wels ) was Benedictine abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Kremsmünster from 1982 to 2007 .

Life

Rudolf Bergmair was the son of the farmer Johann Bergmair and his wife Maria, geb. Mörtendorfer. He attended elementary school in Kremsmünster from 1941 to 1944 and began his high school studies at the Realgymnasium in Linz in 1944 because his parents did not want to send him to the school in Kremsmünster that was run by the National Socialists at the time . In 1945 he moved to the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster , where he graduated in 1951 . In the same year he entered the monastery as a novice and was given the religious name Oddo.

This was followed by a study of philosophy at Kremsmünster Abbey until 1953 and one of Catholic theology at the Benedictine College of St. Anselmo in Rome until 1956. After his profession on August 18, 1955 and ordination on July 15, 1956, he studied at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna , where he graduated as a forestry engineer in 1960. He was then assistant to the forester P. Marian Klinglmair until he became a forester himself in 1968. Since 1966 he was active in various administrative and economic committees of the monastery and the order.

After the death of Abbot Albert Bruckmayr he was elected on August 6, 1982 Abbot and on 4 September by Bishop Richard Weberberger benediziert . His motto was: Servus - servant .

In March 2001, Abbot Oddo Bergmair resigned his office initially for reasons of age, but was re-elected for six years, in 2007 he finally resigned in favor of Ambros Ebhart .

Act

Abbot Oddo continued the renovation work that Abbot Albert had started for the anniversary year 1977. His particular concern was the mission in Brazil and the high school of which he was the protector. From 1987 to 1993 he was a second assistant abbot on the governing body of the Austrian Benedictine Congregation .

During his tenure, Bergmair also failed to clarify numerous cases of abuse in the collegiate high school and the associated boarding school. Among other things, he withdrew the former Konviktdirektor Alfons Mandorfer from the boarding school after specific allegations of sexual abuse in 1996, but continued to appoint him for years as a high school professor and head of the boys' choir. A criminal investigation of the affair only took place under public pressure in 2010 under his successor Abbot Ambros Ebhart .

In a sermon as part of a confirmation in 2001, Bergmair tried to highlight the positive aspects of the sense of community of his youth under National Socialism with the following words: “One people, one Reich, one Führer, and we marched at that time.” After massive public criticism, Bergmair justified his Statement in an interview with the news magazine Format as follows: “A sensitive area today is that only the negative sides of National Socialism are listed. Nothing is said about Stalin , who I know how many millions killed. One can complain about the Nazis, everything is bad there. "
