Odilo Weeger

Odilo Weeger, CMM (* October 14, 1912 as Otto Weeger in Arberg , Germany; † June 8, 2006 in Bulawayo , Zimbabwe ) was a German Roman Catholic missionary of the Mariannhiller Missionaries in Matabeleland , South Africa . He came to Africa in July 1938 and worked in Mariannhill in Natal , South Africa. He was later transferred to Southern Rhodesia , where he worked at St. Patrick's in Bulawayo. From 1939 he was in Lukosi near Hwange active.

Missionary in Matabeleland

In Matabeleland North Province , he traveled from St. Mary's Lukosi to Hwange, Victoria Falls, Matetsi and Gwayi River with the help of a prayer book and a bicycle . He built schools there in places like Gwayi , Binga , Dete and Lupane . He later built a missionary hospital and school in Fatima.

With the support of befriended doctors from Germany, he opened St. Luke's Hospital in Lupane . In 1958 he returned to Bulawayo to work as a pastor at St. Mary's Cathedral. Between 1970 and 1982 he was provincial. He was also the pastor of Christ the King's Hillside Parish for many years.

Odilo Weeger was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit First Class on May 5, 1989 for his work in Matabeleland .
