The first European concert of the Berlin Philharmonic took place in the Smetana Hall of the Prague Municipal House.
The idea for the European concerts came about before the revolutions in 1989 , but could only be implemented after German reunification . The first European concert took place on May 1, 1991 in Prague - a place that is symbolically linked to the Velvet Revolution . The date reminds of the founding day of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra on May 1, 1892; at the same time, the day is close to Europe Day of the Council of Europe . The aim of this series of concerts was to set "a cultural accent in Europe, which is reorganizing itself". In the years that followed, the concerts took place in different countries, with concert halls and theaters as well as churches, museums, a factory hall and open-air theaters serving as performance venues. In addition to guest appearances abroad, the Philharmoniker also gave a number of European concerts in Germany, including at their home venue, the Berlin Philharmonic .
