Odivelas is a place and a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Baixo Alentejo in Portugal . The place belongs to the district of Ferreira do Alentejo and has an area of ​​110.1 km² with 542 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This results in a population density of 4.9 inh / km².

history

At the time of the Roman province of Lusitania , a Roman road of Antoninus Pius crossed today's municipality. From this time one found u. a. Ceramics, coins, building materials, mosaics and tombs. The Dominican André de Resende (1500–1573), an archaeologist and historian of antiquity , found a Roman distance column ( miliarium ) here, which documented the local course of the Roman road.

In 1308 Odivelas was officially mentioned for the first time.

Culture and sights

In addition to the nearby reservoir of Odivelas , the historic "Ponte de Odivelas" over the river Ribeira de Odivelas is also worth seeing . The stone bridge, built from 1816 to 1826, is based on the Roman bridge architecture and is a listed building. Also worth seeing is the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Santo Estevão on the outskirts of the village.
