Odysseas Angelis

Odysseas Angelis ( Greek Οδυσσέας Αγγελής , born February 3, 1912 in Chalkida , Greece ; † March 22, 1987 in Athens ) was a Greek officer and politician .

Life

Angelis joined the army in 1934 and participated in combat operations in Albania from 1940 to 1941 and later in the Middle East between 1943 and 1945 during World War II . After the end of the Second World War he was involved in military measures against the Communist Party of Greece .

After the coup d'état of April 21, 1967, led by Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos , he became a member of the Colonel Junta, which ruled until 1974 (Χούντα των Συνταγματαρχών) . As such, he was Chief of the Army General Staff until 1968 and then from 1969 to 1973 Supreme Commander of the Greek Armed Forces .

After the deposition of King Constantine II and the proclamation of the Republic on June 1, 1973, he became Vice President of the Republic under President Papadopoulos. He lost this post after Papadopoulos was overthrown by the military coup on November 23, 1973.

After the end of military dictatorship and the return of a civilian government under Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis , he was in 1975 for high treason and leading the uprising to a term of imprisonment sentenced of 20 years.

Although he could have applied for parole in 1986, he refused and maintained that he was innocent . A few months later he was found hanged in his cell in Korydallos Prison . An investigation found that he had committed suicide.
