Norther is an offshore wind farm in the Belgian Exclusive Economic Zone in the southern North Sea . The wind park consists of 44 wind turbines , which together have an installed capacity of 370 megawatts .
location
The wind farm is located around 23 kilometers off the coast of Zeebrugge , making it the closest offshore wind farm in Belgium. To the north is the Thorntonbank offshore wind farm .
History and construction
In 2009 the permit for the construction of the Norther wind farm was granted. The operator consortium Norther NV announced in 2016 that MHI Vestas will supply the wind turbines for the project.
The first offshore work began in May 2018. The transformer platform was delivered in August 2018. In the same month Van Oord began installing the monopile foundations.
The erection of the turbines began in February 2019. On February 26th, electricity was fed into the Belgian grid for the first time. All the turbines were installed by the end of April 2019.
In September 2019, an agreement was reached with Google LLC that provides for a purchase of 92 MW for the energy supply of the data center in Saint-Ghislain . The wind farm was officially completed at the end of May 2020.
technology
Transformer platform
The platform is 32 m long, 21 m high and weighs 1,300 tons. The power of the transformer is 410 MW. The platform is connected to the mainland via a 220 kV cable.
Wind turbines
44 MHI Vestas V164 turbines with a nominal output of 8.4 megawatts are used. The wind turbines have a rotor diameter of 164 m.
