The Ohlsiepen is a Siepen that rises in Remscheid - Westhausen and flows into the Wupper like a waterfall on the left in Solingen . It is located in the nature reserve " Wupper and Wupper slopes south of Müngsten ".

Environment and course of the river

Various animal species have been found in the area of ​​Ohlsiepen. For example, were cavity cancer , the caddis fly , Hydraena gracilis , Elmis aenea and salamander spotted.

The rocky bank areas are only sparsely overgrown with moss , ferns and grasses due to the shadows from the hornbeam and oak forest.

In the area of ​​the Wupper valley path, the Ohlsiepen is piped. In the estuary opposite the Wiesenkotten, the Ohlsiepen is shaped like a waterfall. The water flows here at high speed over rubble and rocks.

The Ohlsiepen is completely poisoned from the source to the confluence with the Wupper near the Wiesenkotten. Numerous signs have been warning of skin contact with the water since 2015. Since spring 2017 there has been a call for tenders for an assessment to improve the water quality.

The cause of the pollution was the electroplating company Galvano Fischer in Remscheid-Reinshagen , which simply let wastewater seep into the ground from 1954 to 2014 and thus contaminated the groundwater up to 20 m deep. Chromium (VI) , chromates and nickel have been detected there since 1994 .

It will take around 15 years to renovate the electroplating site. The costs are estimated at EUR 3.45 million.

This has no consequences for the Wupper, as there is considerably more water available here.
