The Ohmbachsee is a reservoir of the Ohmbach in the area of the Palatinate community of Upper Glantal ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). It is located in the southern part of the Ohmbachsee – Glantal holiday region and is the largest still water in the West Palatinate .

Geographical location

The lake extends to about 240  m above sea level. NHN from west-northwest, where the Ohmbach enters, to east-southeast, where the outlet of the Ohmbach to the Glan is. To the right of the lake is the district of Sand von Schönenberg-Kübelberg , to the left is the local community of Gries .

history

The reservoir was created under the project name " Flood retention basin with permanent damming in Ohmbachtal" from 1972 to improve flood protection in this area on the edge of the moorland of the Landstuhler Bruch . Under the responsibility of a special purpose association , the dam was first built and then a canal was built that bypasses the lake from the bridges sewage treatment plant and flows back into the Ohmbach below the dam. If the reservoir was completely filled, this channel would absorb excess water and lead it past the lake. Landscaping measures, in particular the creation of hiking trails along the lake shore and in the surrounding area, completed the project.

In accordance with the requirements of the Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform, the community of Schönenberg-Kübelberg , which was merged into the community of Upper Glantal in 2017, took over the tasks of the dissolved special purpose association on January 1, 1975. Since flood protection turned out to be of secondary importance during the construction work, the Ohmbachsee was rededicated as the central leisure facility, which was opened on July 8, 1978.

Technical specifications

The catchment area of the Ohmbachs is identical to that of the Ohmbach and has an area of 37 km². The length of the lake is about 1200 m, the maximum width about 250, the average width about 100 m. In the season of its greatest extent - with summer traffic jam - the lake covers around 15 hectares and contains around 220,000 m³ of water. Its depth is 5 m.

The dam is 75 m long and 40 m thick at the base and 4.50 m thick at the top. From the foot to the crown it has a height of 8 m. The diameter of the spill tower is 6 m and its height is 7.50 m.

Leisure facilities

Furnishing

Various types of water sports can be practiced on and in the reservoir. Also available are u. a. a protection and leisure hall, the Ohmbachsee camping park and a 3.5 km long barrier-free hiking trail around the lake with a connection to the Diamanten-Höhenour and the Glan-Blies-Weg . There is a water footbath at Gries.

Regular events

Since 1984, the Ohmbachsee tourist office has been organizing the three-day Romantic Lake Festival around the illuminated lake on the third weekend in July , each of which attracts up to 80,000 visitors. Because crimes such as sexual offenses or violations of the protection of minors by promoting “Komatrinkens” increased in the area around the festival , the council of the community of Schönenberg-Kübelberg canceled the guarantee it had previously assumed in autumn 2007 ; thereupon the organizer announced the end for 2008. In March 2008, however, an agency was found that agreed to hold the festival in the future.
