Oksywie ( Oxhöft , kasch. Òksëwié ) on the Kępa Oksywska ( Oxhöfter Kämpe , kasch. Òksëwskô Kãpa ), is now a district of Gdynia ( Gdynia )

history

Village church St. Michael, 13th and 14th century

The name Oxhöft is probably derived from the old Scandinavian word "Oxihoved". According to tradition, the place got its name because the Oxhöfter Kämpe resembles the shape of an ox's head. The fishing village is mentioned in a document as early as 1214. The Oxhöfter champion also found in Mestwin I. mention. The place was the first place of discovery for the Oxhöft culture named after him (also Oksywie culture , Polish Kultura oksywska ).

In 1926 the Polish naval port Gdynia ( Port wojenny Gdynia ) was opened in Oksywie . Today it is part of the port of Gdynia and is still partly on the territory of the city district.

In 1945 the Oxhöfter Kämpe was an evacuation site as part of the Hannibal company . On 4th / 5th In April 1945, about 30,000 soldiers were evacuated from the Oxhöfter Kämpe to the Hela peninsula at the " Walpurgis Night Operation " .

The missile speedboat ORP Oksywie of the Osa class was named after the city district and served in the Polish Navy from 1971 to 2000 .
