Olaflur ( INN ) is an active ingredient that is used locally for the prophylaxis of dental caries and periodontitis .

Chemically, it is the dihydrofluoride of a long-chain tertiary diamine . Olaflur belongs to the amine fluoride group .

use

Olaflur has been used for the prevention of tooth decay and periodontitis since 1966. Concentrations of 500 ppm for children's toothpaste and 1250 ppm for “adults” toothpaste (calculated as fluoride) are sufficient  . The average daily dose is (eng. Defined daily dose , DDD) 1.1 mg (calculated as fluoride).

toxicology

Fluorides are poisonous if used incorrectly. In the event of a permanent overdose, they can be stored in the bones and change their properties. Overdosing in the first few years of life, before the permanent teeth are developed, can lead to dental fluorosis , which is a localized discoloration and weakening of the hard tissue of the teeth. In Germany, dental care medicines containing amine fluoride require a prescription, with the exception of gels in pack sizes of up to 25 g, provided that the packaging states that their use is restricted to adults and children from the age of 6 and to a single dose per week which corresponds to a fluoride content of up to 7 mg.
