The USS McCampbell (DDG-85) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class .
history
The McCampbell was commissioned in 1996 and laid down at Bath Iron Works in 1999 . After a construction period of less than 12 months, the destroyer was launched. In August 2002 it was officially put into service with the United States Navy . The ship is named after David McCampbell , a naval aviator who scored 34 kills in World War II , making it the most successful Navy pilot of all time.
In 2006, the McCampbell was deployed in the Persian Gulf to protect the Basra and Khawr Al Amaya oil terminals . On March 26, the destroyer collided with the civilian cargo ship M / V Rokya 1 , which was flying the Kiribati flag . Two seamen suffered minor injuries on both ships who were treated on the McCampbell , and both ships remained seaworthy despite minor damage to the bow. In the summer, the destroyer took part in the Valiant Shield exercise again. The same exercise was also on the agenda in 2007.
In 2008 the McCampbell was supposed to take part in a multinational exercise with ships of the French and Russian navies as well as the Royal Navy off Vladivostok , but was withdrawn days before the start of the 2008 Russian involvement in the Caucasus conflict . In 2009 she took part in the Talisman Saber exercise with Australian forces and provided disaster relief off the coast of Indonesia in October. In July 2010, the destroyer took part in the Invincible Spirit exercise alongside the USS George Washington (CVN-73) along with South Korean forces . In March 2011, the McCampbell was sent off the coast of Miyagi to search for survivors after the Tōhoku earthquake . At the end of May 2011, the McCampbell intercepted a cargo ship that was supposed to be bringing North Korean missile technology to Burma. Diplomatic pressure from America and Asia is said to have been responsible for the fact that the freighter turned and returned to North Korea.
In July 2011, McCampbell participated in Exercise Talisman Saber 2011, an exercise with the Royal Australian Navy .
Armament
For defense against approaching missiles, the ship received the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) anti - aircraft missiles, which are fired from the Vertical Launching System . For further air defense, a close-in-weapon system in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM was subsequently installed behind the aft chimney structure in 2007 , which was not originally intended for construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).
