The Old Faithful Inn is a hotel by the Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park , Wyoming . It was built in 1904. It has been listed as a building on the National Register of Historic Places since July 1973 and was granted National Historic Landmark status in May 1987 .

The rural, romantic building style is now called National Park Service Rustic and is typical of buildings in national parks in the American West at the beginning of the 20th century.

history

In 1894 the only hotel in the Upper Geyser Basin burned down. A new hotel should be built as a replacement. In 1903, construction work for the Old Faithful Inn under the direction of architect Robert Reamer  could begin thanks to funding from the Northern Pacific Railroad . The hotel was opened in 1904. Above all stones and wood were used for the construction. Old Faithful Inn was expanded to include the east wing in 1919 and the west wing in 1927. In total, it could now accommodate 340 guests.

In 1959, an earthquake caused some damage to the hotel's roof and chimney. In 1988 the hotel had to be evacuated again as part of the great forest fire in Yellowstone National Park . However, the fire was held by the Old Faithful Inn.

From 2004 the hotel was heavily renovated.
