Wapiti Ranger Station

The Wapiti Ranger Station in the Shoshone National Forest in the US state of Wyoming is the oldest ranger station in the United States . The station was built in 1903 as a log cabin made of local wood and has been used continuously ever since. It was the first United States Forest Service ranger station to be built with federal funds. In 2005 some renovations were carried out, such as the replacement of rotten wood.

The station is located 48 km west of Cody on the US Route 14 / 16 / 20 , between Cody and the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park .

The Wapiti Ranger Station was listed as a National Historic Landmark on May 23, 1963 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966 .

The original log cabin and newer outbuildings are still used by the US Forest Service. They house seasonal workers who work in the Wapiti Rager District of the Shoshone National Forest. They also contain the central equipment depot for the Ranger District and stables for pack animals . A visitor center in one of the outbuildings provides information about the wildlife in the area and provides information about hiking, fishing, hunting and camping in the region.
