Fort Yellowstone is a former US Army - base , which today to manage the Yellowstone National Park serves. The fort is recognized as a National Historic Landmark .
history
Yellowstone National Park was established on March 1, 1872 , making it the first national park in the world. In the years after its inception, a civilian team with limited resources ran the park. This group was unable to protect the park's flora and fauna from vandalism and exploitation. Therefore, in 1886 , she handed control of the park to the US Army.
The Army set up a tent camp, Camp Sheridan , in the north of the park, near Mammoth Hot Springs . On May 11, 1891, the Army began building Fort Yellowstone at the same location. By autumn they had erected the first twelve buildings, including a guard house for 15 prisoners, an administration building with three offices, two officers' buildings, a barrack for 60 soldiers, a storage room, a bakery and a stable. In 1893 the Army added a hospital with ten beds and a warehouse for 150 tons of hay to the fort. Thus, the fort had enough capacity to accommodate a single troop. Between 1897 and 1909 the Army expanded the fort's capacity for a second force. The Army completed the construction of additional facilities such as a chapel and a new hospital by 1913. The Army continued to use the fort until 1918 when it transferred control of the park and fort to the newly established National Park Service . The National Park Service has since used the facilities of Fort Yellowstone as the administrative center for Yellowstone National Park and as a park museum.
With the exception of 1904 and 1905, Fort Yellowstone always had one or two cavalry troops stationed. In 1904/05 the fort was far overcrowded with four troops. In the summer units of the Army were also in camps outside the fort. The service in Yellowstone was a popular change from the otherwise tough life of a soldier.
On July 31, 2003, Fort Yellowstone was entered as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
Historical importance of the fort
The Army ran Yellowstone National Park for 32 years. The US Army has not managed a national park longer.
The park is often viewed by environmentalists as the first standard for national park management. During its 32-year presence in the park, the Army developed regulations that placed great emphasis on protection. The park's flora and fauna have been effectively protected from vandalism and extinction . The National Park Service adopted many of the Army regulations. Even the hats worn by the National Park Service rangers (the Ranger Stetsons) are derived from old Army hats.
