The Lake Hotel , also known as the Lake Yellowstone Hotel , is a historic building built in 1891 on the north shore of Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park . In 2015 it was designated a National Historic Landmark .

history

The Lake Hotel was built in 1891, 19 years after the founding of Yellowstone National Park, in the style of the then common hotels along railway routes on behalf of the Northern Pacific Railway . In 1903 the hotel was renovated under the direction of architect Robert Reamer . Reamer was already known for building the Old Faithful Inn . He added Ionic columns and 15 dummy balconies and expanded the roof. The hotel was subsequently known as the Lake Colonial Hotel .

Further renovations followed in 1929, including the opening of a dining room and a pillared hall. 1981-1991 the building was heavily renovated jointly by the National Park Service and the tenant TW Recreational Services , keeping the style of the 1920s. The hotel has been operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts since the acquisition of TW Recreational Services .

In 2012, the hotel was listed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a Historic Hotels of America . The hotel has been listed as a building on the National Register of Historic Places since May 1991 . In February 2015, the building was recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
