Karl Eduard Louis von Blumenthal (born August 1, 1811 in Gartz (Oder) , † May 25, 1903 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Louis was the son of Ludwig Albrecht von Blumenthal (1774–1813) and his wife Friderike Charlotte Dorothea, née von Below (1783–1853). His father was a captain in the Brandenburg Dragoon Regiment . The later Prussian field marshal Leonhard von Blumenthal (1810–1900) was his older brother.

Military career

Blumenthal received his education in the cadet houses of Kulm and Berlin . On July 29, 1829 he was transferred as a second lieutenant to the Guard Reserve Infantry Regiment (the later Guard Fusilier Regiment ) of the Prussian Army . He attended the General War School between October 1832 and July 1835 . In 1843/46 he was then assigned to the topographic office , became prime lieutenant and in June 1849 joined the school department of the training infantry battalion. A year later, he was promoted to captain and was appointed company commander . As a major he was then from May 23, 1857 in Dusseldorf commander of the 2nd battalion in the 17th Landwehr Regiment. As part of the Sardinian War , the regiment mobilized in 1859 and in the following year formed the tribe for the newly formed 8th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 57 . Blumenthal commanded the 2nd Battalion in Neuss in this association and rose to lieutenant colonel on October 18, 1861 . On January 9, 1864 he was appointed commander of the 6th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 52 in Posen and on June 25, 1864, Blumenthal was promoted to colonel .

As such, he led his regiment in 1866 during the war against Austria in the battles near Nachod , Skalitz , Schweinschädel and Königgrätz . His achievements were honored by being awarded the Order of the Crown, Second Class with Swords. On July 21, 1867, Blumenthal was released from his command, briefly transferred to the officers of the army and on August 10, 1867, under position à la suite of his previous regiment, appointed commander of the 26th Infantry Brigade in Münster . In this position on March 22, 1868 promoted to major general, Blumenthal was on June 13, 1869, the statutory board under award of the Red Eagle II. Class with oak leaves for disposition made.

Blumenthal had married Auguste Luise Sylvia Tugendreich von Burgsdorff (1819–1900) on August 14, 1849 in Potsdam . She was the daughter of forester Karl Wilhelm von Burgsdorff. The following sons were born from the marriage:
