Oldemiro Júlio Marques Balói (born April 9, 1955 in Lourenço Marques , Portuguese East Africa , † April 12, 2021 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) was a Mozambican economist and politician ( FRELIMO ). Since 2008 he has held the post of Foreign Minister of the Republic of Mozambique, under both Presidents Guebuza and Nyusi . In December 2017, Balói was dismissed by President Nyusi.

Life

Oldeimo Balói was born on April 9, 1955 in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo ). There he attended both primary and secondary school Liceu António Enes (now Liceu Francisco Manyanga ), which he graduated in 1975. He then studied economics at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and completed his master's degree in the same course in 1994 at the University of London .

Promotion to Minister

Joaquim Chissano appointed Balói as Deputy Minister for International Cooperation in 1990. In 1994 he moved to the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism as Senior Minister, also under Chissano. He held this office until 1999. In 1999 he moved to the board of directors of the privatized bank Banco Internacional de Moçambique , which later became Millennium BIM .

Change to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

On March 10, 2008, he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation by President Armando Guebuza as part of a cabinet reshuffle to succeed Alcinda Abreu . In his role as Foreign Minister, he gave a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2009 .

He kept the post of foreign minister under the new government of President Filipe Nyusi ( Nyusi cabinet ). As part of a cabinet reshuffle in December 2017, President Nyusi dismissed Oldemiro Balói and appointed José Pachecho as his successor.

Private matters and death

Balói was married and had two children. He was a follower of the Presbyterian faith .

He died at the age of 66 in a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he had been hospitalized since February 22, 2021.
