Olga Amelchenko

Olga Amelchenko (* 1988 in the USSR ) is a Russian jazz musician ( alto saxophone , composition ).

Amelchenko began singing in the choir at the age of five and took piano lessons two years later; she continued to learn Dombra . Between 2003 and 2006 she studied at the Abakan Conservatory. After studying choral conducting for a year, she switched to the saxophone. In 2006 she moved to the Novosibirsk Conservatory. After graduating in 2010, she took classical saxophone lessons to expand her knowledge of the instrument. In 2012 she moved to Germany; initially she studied there for two years at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Wolfgang Engstfeld . She completed her bachelor's degree in 2018 at the Jazz Institute Berlin , where she completed her master's degree in arrangement and composition with Peter Less , Greg Cohen and John Hollenbeck a year later . In 2018 she released the album Shaping Motions on Unit Records with her quartet of Igor Osypov , Igor Spallati , Jesus Vega and the guests Florian Menzel (trumpet) and Ilkka Uksila (vibraphone) . She also leads her large ensemble and plays in the quintet of Musina Ebobissé , Thijs de Klijn and the Hans Anselm Bigband.
