The Oligoclada sylvia is the smallest of the 24 dragonfly species of the genus Oligoclada from the subfamily Brachydiplacinae . The species has its main distribution along the Amazon and its foothills.

Construction of the Imago

In Oligoclada sylvia, the abdomen measures between 13 and 13.6 millimeters. The thorax is metallic black and is crossed by four bluish bands. These are grayishly pollinated. While the labium and the lower half of the forehead of the animals are yellowish, the upper half of the forehead is metallic blue. The occiput then tends to be very dark red, but has two yellow points on the rear edge. In addition, the lower half of the forehead turns grayish towards the eyes. The hind wings measure between 16 and 16.2 millimeters. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) reaches 1.3 to 1.5 millimeters. The number of anterodal veins is seven in the fore wing and five in the hind wing. The last Antenodalader in the front wing is complete, so the Costalader extends to the Radiusader . There are five to six or five of Postnodal loaders.

Research history

The species was first described in 1889 by William Forsell Kirby using an animal from the Brazilian state of Ceará . Kirby placed the species in the genus Nannothemis . Only Friedrich Ris recognized the error in 1911.
