Oligoclada is a genus of dragonflies consisting of 22 species. The genus belongs to the sailing dragonfly subfamily Brachydiplacinae and wasdescribedby Ferdinand Karsch in 1890. The distribution area extends from Guatemala to the northeast of Argentina , as well as to Bolivia and Paraguay .

features

Oligoclada species are small dragonflies and reach lengths between 20 and 35 millimeters. The abdomen ( abdomen ) is sprinkled with old males grayish blue. Young males, however, still have a metallic blue abdomen. On the underside of the abdomen of the males, spots of red color can be found on the seventh to tenth segment of some species . The abdomen of the females is usually reddish brown. The chest ( thorax ) is usually metallic blue. It is sometimes brownish, especially in young animals and females. The wings are transparent and only the four species Oligoclada abbreviata , Oligoclada heliophila , Oligoclada umbricola and Oligoclada walkeri have a small spot on the base of the wing. Oligoclada borrori has dark shadows at the tips. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) is usually dark red brownish.

Habitat and way of life

The animals live along small rivers, canals and on the edges of ponds.

Research history

The genre was established in 1890 by Ferdinand Karsch. The newly described species Oligoclada pachystigma served as the generotype . However, Friedrich Ris later identified one of Karsch's two animals as a different species and described it as Oligoclada laetitia . Before the genus was established, Oligoclada abbreviata and Oligoclada sylvia were already described. While the former only found its way into the genus via several intermediate stations, the latter was transferred directly to the genus Oligoclada in 1911 . At the time of the last major revision of the genus by Donald Joyce Borror , the genus comprised 14 species. Borrors Oligoclada raineyi but was later Oligoclada abbreviata synonymised. Today the genus includes 24 species.
