The Oligoclada monosticha is one of the 24 dragonfly species of the genus Oligoclada from the subfamily Brachydiplacinae . The species has its main distribution along the Amazon and its foothills.

Construction of the Imago

The abdomen ( abdomen ) measures between 15 and 15.5 millimeters in Oligoclada monosticha . The thorax is metallic blue black in the males and is crossed by three grayish ribbons. The female thorax, on the other hand, is metallic reddish brown and becomes darker towards the bottom. Although the three stripes are in the same position as the male, their color is yellow. Starting from the yellow labium , the upper lip ( labrum ) and the adjoining frontal plate ( clypeus ) are yellowish green. The occiput is brown-black.

The hind wings measure about 18.2 millimeters in the males. The hind wings of the females are slightly larger at 19.8 to 19.9 millimeters. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) reaches 1.6 to 1.9 millimeters in the males and 1.7 to 2.1 millimeters in the females. The number of anterior veins is seven to nine in the fore wing and five to seven in the hind wing. The last antenodal loader in the front wing is complete, so it extends from the Costa loader to the radial artery . Post-nodal veins exist seven to eight in both pairs of wings. An important criterion for delimiting the species within the genus is the row of cells only one cell high after the wing triangle in the forewing.

Research history

The species was first described in 1931 by Donald Joyce Borror using an animal from Leticia . With the name monosticha Borror refers to the wing cells after the wing triangle, which allow the species, with the exception of Oligoclada sylvia , to be differentiated from all other species of the genus.
