The Oligoclada umbricola is one of the 24 dragonfly species of the genus Oligoclada from the subfamily Brachydiplacinae . The species is common in northeast Colombia and northwest Venezuela . Together with Oligoclada heliophila, it is the only Oligoclada species found north of the Andes . The species was first described in 1931 by Donald Joyce Borror using a male from La Fría in the Venezuelan state of Táchira . The female is still undescribed.

Construction of the Imago

The abdomen measures between 16.5 and 16.0 millimeters in Oligoclada umbricola males. While the labium is black and yellowish on the outermost lobes, the adjoining upper lip ( labrum ) is black below and yellowish above. The frontal plate ( clypeus ) is colored yellowish gray. The occiput is convex and metallic dark brown. Its rear edge is almost straight, which allows a distinction between Oligoclada umbricola and Oligoclada walkeri . The edge of the latter is clearly bulged. The transparent hind wings measure between 22.0 and 24.0 millimeters in the males. At the base there is a small dark spot that is slightly smaller than that of Oligoclada heliophila . The wing mark ( pterostigma ) reaches 1.9 to 2.4 millimeters in the males. The number of anterodal veins is nine and a half to eleven and a half for the forewing, and seven to eight and a half for the hind wing. The last Antenodalader in the front wing is incomplete, so it does not extend from the Costalader to the Radiusader . There are seven to ten and eight to ten post-nodal loaders.
