The resin arm hair moss ( Oligotrichum hercynicum ) is a deciduous moss from the family Polytrichaceae or hair cap moss. In Europe it is the only occurring species of the genus Oligotrichum . Synonyms are Oligotrichum incurvum (Brid.) Lindb. and Polytrichum hercynicum Hedw.

features

This type of moss forms loose, yellowish green to green, 2 to 3 centimeters high lawns. The leaves of the stiff stems are scaly in the lower part, gradually larger towards the top and about 3 to 4 millimeters long, lanceolate, unedged, barely divorced at the base, moist upright and curved inward, dry lying and almost hooked. The leaf margins are flat and slightly serrated in the lower part, curved in towards the tip and serrated at a distance. The leaf vein emerges as a small spike tip from the leaf tip. It is covered on both sides with serpentine and serrated lamellae: on the upper side (ventral side) there are up to 12 lamellae that are up to 12 cells high; on the underside (dorsal side) 2 to 4 lamellae, these are only a few cells high. The thick-walled leaf cells are short-rectangular at the base, rounded-square in the upper part of the leaf, often slightly wider than long and around 14 µm in size.

The Harz arm hair moss is diocesan . Spore capsules are not infrequently formed. The seta is up to 3 centimeters long and carries the slightly inclined to upright capsule. This is constricted under the mouth, when fresh, round, and when dry, longitudinally furrowed. The capsule lid is conically pointed to short beaked, the kalyptra cap-shaped and covered with a few upright hairs. Spores are 10 to 15 µm in size, yellowish green and smooth. Spore ripening time is in summer.

Ecology and diffusion

The moss grows in sunny to shady, acidic, lime-free, fresh to moderately moist locations on sandy, sandy-loamy and gravelly soils, on embankments, along forest roads and on unpaved forest paths, and also on newly created open ground.

It is primarily a mountain moss and occurs scattered to widespread from low mountain ranges to alpine regions, in Europe mainly in Northern Europe and in the Alps. In some cases, however, there are also occurrences in low areas, such as in the north German plain. Worldwide there are occurrences in Europe, Iceland, Greenland and North America.
