Francis Greenleaf Allinson

Francis Greenleaf Allinson (born December 16, 1856 in Burlington, New Jersey , † June 23, 1931 in Providence ) was an American classical philologist who taught at Brown University from 1895 to 1928 .

Life

Francis Greenleaf Allinson studied at Haverford College , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1876 . He then went to Harvard University , where he repeated his bachelor's degree in 1877 (the master he put in 1879 at Haverford College). From 1877 to 1880 he worked as a fellow at Johns Hopkins University , where he received his Ph.D. in 1880 from Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve. received his doctorate .

From 1880 Allinson worked as Assistant Professor of Greek and Latin at Haverford College, from 1882 as Headmaster at the University School of Baltimore . In 1892 he moved to Williams College as Assistant Professor of Greek and Latin , and in 1895 to Brown University as Associate Professor of Classical Philology . There he was appointed David Benedict Professor of Greek Literature and History in 1915 . In 1928 he retired .

Allinson was one of the first Classical Philologists to receive their education exclusively in the United States. His doctorate at Johns Hopkins University was the second there in Classical Philology after that of Ernest Gottlieb Sihler (1878). During his career, Allinson received numerous recognitions: he received an honorary Masters degree from Williams College in 1895 and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin (1922), Trinity College at Hartford (1922) and Haverford College (1931). In 1910/1911 he was Annual Professor at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens , in 1914 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1917/1918 he was Sather Professor at Berkeley and in 1921/1922 President the American Philological Association .

As a researcher, Allinson was particularly concerned with the history of the Greek language (especially literary prose), with the satirist Lukian and with the comedy poet Menander . Among other things, he wrote the first English translation of the then known Menander Fragments (1921).
