Oliver Samuel Campbell (born February 25, 1871 in New York City , † July 11, 1953 in Campbellton , Canada ) was an American tennis player .

Career

Campbell took part in the American tennis championships (now the US Open ) from 1886 . From 1890 to 1892 he won the men's singles title there three times. When he won his first victory, he was just 19 years old; This record lasted exactly 100 years until Pete Sampras took over as the youngest winner in 1990. In the men's doubles he was successful three times (1888, 1891, 1892). Campbell started out as a baseline player, but was one of the first American players to switch to serve and volley .

In 1892 he took part in the Wimbledon Championships once. In singles he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Arthur Gore , in doubles he was able to reach the semi-finals alongside George Hillyard .

Most recently he registered for the American championships in 1893, but did not take part again. Then he ended his tennis career.

He died in Canada in 1953 at the age of 82. In 1955 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
