Olivier Langrand

Olivier Michel Langrand (born September 19, 1958 in Angers , France ) is a French ornithologist and conservationist . His main interests are the avifauna of Madagascar and other islands of the western Indian Ocean .

Life

From 1974 to 1977 Langrand was trained at the Lycée Agricole in Obernai . From 1977 to 1979 he studied at the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg . In 1993 he enrolled at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg , where he graduated with a Master of Science degree in 1995 . From 1986 to 1996 Langrand worked for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Madagascar, for which he was awarded the Ordre du Mérite Malgache in 1997. From 1996 to 2000 he was director of the Central Africa section of the WWF in Gabon . From 2000 to 2006 he worked as vice-president of the Africa and Madagascar section of the Conservation International organization . From 2006 to 2009 he was Senior Vice President of the Center for Conservation and Government of Conservation International. From 2009 to 2011 he was Executive Vice President of Conservation International, where he led cooperation with governments and multilateral institutions. From 2011 to 2014 he was director of global affairs for Island Conservation , a conservation group that organizes conservation projects for endangered species on islands. Since the beginning of 2015, Langrand has been Executive Director of the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), a global initiative that supports non-governmental organizations and other private sector partners financially and technically in protection programs for critical ecosystems , especially biodiversity hotspots .

Langrand is the author of various books on the fauna of Madagascar, the Mascarene Islands, the Comoros and the Seychelles, as well as over 100 scientific articles, including the first scientific description of the stone slab Madagascar singer ( Cryptosylvicola randrianasoloi ) in 1996 together with Steven M. Goodman and Bret M. Whitney belongs to a monotypical genus . As a passionate bird watcher , Langrand has traveled to 120 countries.

Taxa named after Langrand

In 2000, Steven Goodman named the extinct Ampoza pound ( Brachypteracias langrandi ) in honor of Langrand. In addition, two Malagasy Insektentaxa are named after him, the Eintagsfliegenart Ranorythus long randi and the ant Strumigenys long randi .
