from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Olivier Cedric Rieppel (born September 21, 1951 ) is a Swiss zoologist and paleontologist .

Life

Rieppel studied zoology and paleontology at the University of Basel , University of London and University of Montreal . He also received his doctorate in Basel . He then worked as a lecturer at the Paleontological Institute and Museum of the University of Zurich , where he also completed his habilitation . He then moved to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago (USA) as Curator of Fossil Amphibians and Reptiles , where he has been a professor in the Department of Geology since 1991 .

He is primarily concerned with the morphology and phylogeny of the sauropsids in paleontology . Rieppel is a recognized expert in the field of sauropterygians ( placodon animals , pachypleurosaurs , nothosaurs ) and has also made significant contributions to Triassic fish (e.g. Saurichthys ) and reptiles in general. In particular he contributed to the discussion about the phylogenetic position of the turtles .

Rieppel has written numerous historical and biophilosophical writings. He paid special attention to the history and theory of phylogenetic systematics and cladistics . He is also interested in topics in evolutionary biology.

Rieppel is a member of various professional societies , co-editor of various scientific journals and author of numerous scientific and popular scientific publications.

Dedication names

The chameleon genus Rieppeleon was named after Rieppel in 2004 .
