Olle Bærtling , (born December 6, 1911 in Halmstad , † May 2, 1981 in Stockholm ) was an important Swedish painter and sculptor .

life and work

Bærtling studied in Paris in 1948 with André Lhote and Fernand Léger . In 1950 he made the acquaintance of Auguste Herbin and joined the Réalités Nouvelles group. Since his interest was directed towards the integration of art and architecture , he co-founded the Groupe d'Espace in 1952 and joined the international artist group of the Denise René gallery in Paris.

From 1950 he developed a purely geometric, non-figurative style and from 1954 onwards he created so-called “open forms” in his paintings - images of geometric abstraction with strong coloring and truncated triangles, which are often black or dissonant color tones. He also created sculptures and worked with architects such as David Helldén . Several of his paintings are in the collection of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

Since 1954 he created sculptural works, many of which were permanently installed in public spaces in the following years. 1959–60, Baertling carried out a public wall painting in the Hötorgshusen , the first high-rise buildings in Stockholm, on behalf of the City of Stockholm. An 84.7 meter high sculpture designed in 1961 for public space in central Stockholm could not be realized. In 1967 a public work for a new high school was created in Uppsala.

Major projects for various cities such as Düsseldorf or Abu Dhabi, including again with the architect David Helldén , in which sculptural and architectural visions were to be combined, were never realized.
