One Fathom Bank Lighthouse ( malay Rumah Api Permatang Sedepa ) is the name for two lighthouse buildings ( english Lighthouse ) off the coast of the Malaysian state of Selangor . You are standing on the sandbank of the same name in the Strait of Malacca . The beacon warns shipping of the dangerous shoal and is used to approach Port Klang , Malaysia's largest seaport .

history

The sandbar was surveyed by John Turnbull Thomson in the mid-19th century . It extends over a length of about five nautical miles and was named after a nautical thread because of its shallow water .

The first lighthouse was built on the solid ground of the sandbar in 1852 and replaced by a pile structure in 1874 . The third lighthouse was built in 1907 and it was active until 1999.

The current lighthouse was built in 1999. It stands in the immediate vicinity of the tower built in 1907. The structures are known as the Old and New One Fathom Bank Lighthouse . They can be reached by boat, but may not be entered. The lake area around the two lighthouses is a popular fishing area and a traffic separation area has been set up west of the sandbank .

Old One Fathom Bank Lighthouse

The lighthouse built in 1907

The structure, erected in 1907, stands on circularly arranged concrete piles with an octagonal, two-story building for the beacon keepers and a cast-iron tower for the beacon. The 27  m high structure cost £ 246,963 at the time .

With the commissioning of the new lighthouse, the beacon was extinguished and abandoned in 1999. Due to its historical and architectural importance, however, the building was preserved and extensively restored from 2004 to 2005. On January 31, 2004, a postage stamp with the image of the lighthouse was issued.

New One Fathom Bank Lighthouse

The new and 43  m high lighthouse was built in 1999. It also stands on stilts and offers more space for personnel and equipment. The additional jetty of concrete may also sport fishermen are used.

The identifier of the beacon consists of a group of four white flashes with a return of twenty seconds (Fl (4) W.20s). Due to its importance, the tower is also equipped with a radar beacon .
