The St. Nicolas Church

Oost-Vlieland ( West Frisian East-Flylân ) is the only village on the island of Vlieland in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands . The village has over 1,000 inhabitants and is, as the name suggests, at the eastern end of the island.

history

Oost-Vlieland was first mentioned in 1245. At the beginning the village was only inhabited by poor farmers and fishermen. In the 17th century, however, when the Vlie was used more and more as a landing stage for the growing Dutch merchant fleet, Oost-Vlieland became more and more prosperous. There was also another village on Vlieland called West-Vlieland , which was destroyed by a storm surge in 1736 .

Buildings

The village stretches along the Dorpsstraat ( Dorfstrasse ), which has many shops, restaurants and a cinema. It forms the lifeline of the place. The oldest house in Oost-Vlieland and on the entire island of Vlieland is the Tromp's Huys , a former admiral's office for monitoring merchant shipping, which is now used as a museum. In addition to the St. Nicolas church stands at Kerkplein the to 1950 as a poorhouse, orphanage and widows used Armhuis from the year 1662. The highest elevation on the island, the Vuurboetsduin , standing lighthouse Vuurduin is open during the summer season for the island visitors.
