Oosterleek (2012)

Oosterleek is a village in the municipality of Drechterland in the Dutch province of North Holland .

location

Oosterleek is located directly on the Markermeer , a section of the former Zuiderzee that is now diked all around , behind the old sea dike Zuijderdijk, about halfway between the towns of Enkhuizen and Hoorn and about 10 kilometers from them. A road branches off from the Zuiderdijk, which also serves as a road, and runs through the village. Most of Oosterleek's houses are on this street. One kilometer after the end of Oosterleek, the road continues to the neighboring village of Wijdenes, which had around 1000 inhabitants in 2013.

history

It belonged to the municipality of Venhuizen until January 1, 2006 and before that, until 1970, to the municipality of Wijdenes . The village had 108 inhabitants in 2004. In 2007, Oosterleek was merged with these farmers in the municipality of Drechterland .

Oosterleek was first mentioned as Oesterleke in the 1311 year. The place name comes from the eastern branching of a watercourse, a leek . It has been known since 1419 that communities of residents existed with the village of Wijdenes. For centuries, the inhabitants of Oosterleek lived from fishing and seafaring in addition to agriculture. In the first half of the 17th century, Oosterleek experienced a strong economic boom. As a result, the number of residents also increased significantly. Around 500 people lived in the village during its heyday and the brief period thereafter. But the economic situation changed and the number of inhabitants quickly fell. In 1730 about 190 and in 1795 only 100 people lived in Oosterleek. After that, the A number remained stable. In 2004 the village had 108 inhabitants. Including the farming communities Leekerweg and De Weed near the village, the population is around 200.

A small part of the old Oosterleek is now in the Markermeer, around which the dike was relocated to the north in order to better protect the area from the former Zuiderzee. A church is said to have stood on this small part in the past. The current church in the village was built in 1695.

Buildings

A little south of Oosterleek on the corner of the Zuiderdijk is "het Vuurtje van Leek", a small lighthouse with a stanza from a poem by Emily Dickinson attached.

On the northeastern edge of Oosteleek are the remains of an old open-air swimming pool, of which there is still a small swimming area in the Markermeer. About 500 meters further north-east is the holiday home area "Zomerpark West-Frisia" with just over 50 holiday homes from the 1960s and 1970s.
