Plant description

This herbaceous perennial plant reaches heights of between 10 and 30 cm.

The inflorescence includes two to ten flowers . The sepals are colored green, with the lateral ones often overflowing with red in the lower half. The petals are bare. The undivided to slightly three-lobed, red-brown lip has a bare edge, which can be yellow or brown in color, otherwise the lip is velvety short-haired. The lip appears convex and rarely has a weakly pronounced cusp, it appears truncated in front and a small appendage can be seen. The extended time consists of longitudinal stripes that are two to three times connected and branched sideways. It can rarely appear H-shaped, but it is always brown with a light border.

The flowering period extends from March to June.

Distribution and description of the location

The distribution area extends over Greece and northern Albania . You can find this orchid on poor grass , in light forests and bushes with fresh, alkaline soils. This species can be found in the mountains up to an altitude of 1700 meters above sea level.

ecology

The bee Andrena symphyti was observed as a pollinator .

Systematics

It has yet to be checked carefully whether this species is independent or just a subspecies of the Great Spider-Ragwurz ( Ophrys sphegodes ). After Baumann, Künkele and Lorenz it is a subspecies of Ophrys sphegodes ( Ophrys sphegodes subsp. Hebes Kalop. ).
