Opuntia chlorotica is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet chlorotica means 'colored green'. English trivial names are "Clockface Prickly Pear", "Flapjack Prickly Pear" and "Pancake Prickly Pear".

Opuntia chlorotica grows shrubby to tree-like and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. The often well-developed trunk is thorny, up to 30 centimeters long and has a diameter of up to 20 centimeters. The round to broadly elongated shoot sections are blue-green to greenish yellow. They are 15 to 20 inches long, 12 to 18 inches wide and 1 to 2 inches thick. The subtle leaves are up to 6 millimeters long. The areoles , which are up to 2 centimeters apart , carry numerous yellow, non-sloping glochids up to 4.5 millimeters in length. The 1 to 7 usually light yellow spines are 2.5 to 4 inches long. They are subpulate, arched back, erect or curved.

The pale yellow flowers are tinged red, between 5 and 8 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The fleshy, almost spherical to elliptical fruits are greyish and reddish in color. They are 4 to 6 inches long and 2 to 3.5 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia chlorotica is distributed in the US states of California , Nevada , Utah and New Mexico as well as the Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora at altitudes of 800 to 2300 meters.

The first description was published in 1856 by George Engelmann and John Milton Bigelow . A synonym is Opuntia palmeri .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
