Salzachtal (room unit)
The Salzach Valley is the second smallest of the 41 Upper Austrian spatial units and extends along the Salzach and the border with Bavaria .
location
The room unit is entirely located in the Braunau am Inn district .
The area of the Salzach Valley is 25.44 km² and extends over around 30 km from north to south. The width is a maximum of 3 km, usually the spatial unit is much narrower (up to 200 m). The deepest area is around 350 m above sea level. A. about 1 km south of Überackern. The highest area of the area is at the border with Salzburg at around 460 m above sea level. A.
The following municipal areas are predominantly or entirely in the Salzach Valley (in alphabetical order): Hochburg-Ach , Ostermiething , St. Pantaleon and St. Radegund .
The room unit is surrounded by the following Upper Austria room units (from south to north): Südinnviertler Seengebiet , Weilharts- and Lachforst , Neukirchner Platte and Inntal .
The Salzach Valley is divided into four sub-units:
- Salzach river including alluvial forest area
- Ettenau
- Salzachleiten
- Open cultural landscape with settlement area
Characteristic
- Elongated valley landscape of the Lower Salzach, where the river is regulated but can flow freely.
- The meadow area has an almost continuous strip of forest up to 500 meters wide. Partly natural forests ( white willow , gray alder , ash forests and hybrid poplar ). Due to the regulation, numerous nutrient-rich oxbow holes are available in the floodplain.
- Significant bird area with populations of corncrake , eagle owl and kingfisher . Beavers can also be found.
- Flood protection dam separates the alluvial forest from the poorly forested cultural landscape of the Salzachau. Outside the dam there is a mixed farming and meadow area. The meadows are species-rich wet meadows , especially near Ettenau and Schwaigau.
- In the Ettenau subunit there is still the traditional cultural landscape ( orchards , small forests and hedges ). Agriculture is predominant on the lower terrace.
- South of Ostermiething the area is mainly used industrially, north of Ostermiething the hillside forest is extensive and continuous.
- The subunit Salzach passing marks the eastern edge of the indoor unit and is largely near-natural (ash, sycamore - and beech) forested. There are also large spruce forests . There are deep gorges, conglomerate and Flinz slopes. Many sources distinguish this area.
- The Austufe and the lower terrace are only sparsely populated.
