Opuntia larreyi is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). A Spanish common name is "Nopal Camueso".

description

Opuntia larreyi grows shrubby without a conspicuous trunk, branches out from the base and reaches heights of 1 to 1.5 meters. The glauk- green, obovate to circular shoot sections are 35 to 40 centimeters long, up to 26 centimeters wide and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters thick. The conical leaf rudiments are short. The small oval areoles are 4 to 5.5 centimeters apart and the numerous, short glochids are yellowish. There are usually no thorns . Occasionally up to three thorns are formed on young areoles.

The yellow flowers reach a length of up to 7 centimeters. The almost spherical, humped, purple-colored fruits are up to 10 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia larreyi is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo and Querétaro .

The first description was in 1896 by John Merle Coulter . A nomenklatorisches synonym is Opuntia robusta var. Larreyi (FACWeber ex JMCoult.) Bravo (1972).
