history

The orangery was planned and built by Heinrich Hübsch between 1853 and 1857 together with parts of the botanical garden .

Portal on the southern head building

The portals of the two head buildings facing the city are adorned with four statues by Franz Xaver Reich depicting the four seasons. In the lunettes there are allegorical figures, representing the four parts of the world, painted after compositions by the Baden artists Joseph Heinemann and Rudolf Gleichauf . The painting was done by the porcelain painter Spelter in a kind of faience painting, which was a novelty for the time.

In 1870 Karl Dyckerhoff's original wooden structure was replaced by a more modern and safe steel structure. During the Second World War, the orangery was badly damaged in 1944. In 1969 it was extensively renovated. In April 2005, another renovation was necessary because the original structure was dilapidated. In 2006, the Karlsruhe Orangery was reopened in a ceremony by the then Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg , Günther Oettinger .
