history

The area of today's Orangevilles was sold to a land developer on October 7, 1820 and settled from around 1829. The population increased steadily; the administration of the settlement was organized by Orange Lawrence, who bought 300 acres of land in the south of the parish and opened a mill, a tavern and a shop in the village, as well as the school and the post office. When the place was named a village in 1863 , the villagers chose it to give the place its name. In 1873 the place was made an independent town . At that time the place had 1,458 inhabitants.

In April 1871, the TG&B Railway opened its station in Orangeville, which led to significant population and economic growth in the place. Passenger traffic was only stopped 100 years later, in 1971. Today Orangeville is primarily used as a dormitory for nearby Toronto.
