Vegetative characteristics

The oriental white oak grows as a deciduous tree that can reach heights of up to 30 meters. The grayish brown bark of the branches is initially hairy, but becomes bald over time. The rounded lenticels of the bark are brownish in color.

The alternate and spirally arranged leaves on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The hairless petiole has a length of 1 to 1.3 centimeters. With a length of 5 to 30 centimeters and a width of 5 to 16 centimeters, the simple leaf blade is approximately elliptical-obovate to obovate, with a wedge-shaped to rounded blade base and blunt to briefly pointed or blade tip. The edges of the spread are pointed or bluntly sawn to wavy. The upper side of the leaf is bare, while the underside of the leaf, depending on the variety, is densely covered with gray to grayish-brown and fine to felty hairs or is hairless. 10 to 15 leaf veins branch off from each side of the leaf central nerve.

Generative characteristics

The oriental white oak is single-sexed ( monoecious ). The flowering period in China extends from March to May and the fruits ripen in September to November. The female flowers are axillary on young shoots. The grayish hairy bracts stand close together and are oval-lanceolate in shape with a size of around 0.2 centimeters.

Acorns, a nut fruit , are formed as fruits . About half of these are surrounded by a cup-like shaped fruit cup that is 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and 1.2 to 2 centimeters in diameter. The acorns stand individually or in clusters of two to three together. The glans itself is 1.7 to 2.5 centimeters long and 1.3 to 1.8 centimeters thick and ellipsoidal to ovoid. The stylus foot has a diameter of about 0.1 centimeter.

Occurrence

The natural range of the oriental white oak includes the eastern and southeastern Asia. It extends over large parts of China, Laos , Myanmar , Vietnam and the Korean Peninsula to Taiwan and Japan .

In China, the oriental white oak thrives in moderately humid mixed forests at altitudes of 100 to 2700 meters.

Systematics

It was first described as Quercus aliena in 1850 by Carl Ludwig Blume in Museum Botanicum , Volume 1, Number 19, Page 298.

According to R. Govaerts, the following varieties are distinguished:

  • Quercus aliena var. Acutiserrata Maxim. (Syn .: Quercus acutidentata var. Latifolia Liou , Quercus meridionalis Liou , Quercus meridionalis var. Chungnanensis Liou ): It occurs in China, Japan and on the Korean Peninsula. It seems to have run wild in Taiwan.
  • Quercus aliena var. Aliena (Syn .: Quercus hirsutula flower ): It occurs in the entire range of the species.
  • Quercus aliena var. Alticupuliformis H. Wei Jen & LMWang (Syn .: Quercus aliena f. Alticupuliformis ( H. Wei Jen & LMWang) H. Wei Jen & LMWang ): It occurs in northern China.
  • Quercus aliena var. Pekingensis Schottky : It occurs in northern China.
  • Quercus aliena var. Pellucida flower (Syn .: Quercus aliena f. Pellucida (flower) Kitam. ): It occurs in China and Japan.
