Anatol , in Scandinavia Carola , was a hurricane that swept across Denmark and southwest Sweden on December 3, 1999 . Along with Lothar and Storm Martin, it is one of the three winter storms of 1999. Anatol reached an average of 136 km / h, in gusts even 183 km / h.
course
On December 2nd, around noon, Anatole was first registered as a small wave in the sea area west of Ireland . At the time, the core pressure was 1015 hPa . The next day it reached the North Sea and at lunchtime had a pressure below 970 hPa in the core. This made it an independent gravure vortex. As a full-grown hurricane vortex, it raged over Denmark and southern Sweden. Its foothills reached far into northern Germany. It reached the lowest point of 955 hPa at night over the Skåne peninsula . Anatol came to an end on December 4, 1999, at 970 hPa, over the Baltic States .
Effects
Anatole caused considerable damage in Denmark and Northern Germany. In Denmark it has since been considered the worst hurricane of the 20th century. On Sylt , the power supply collapsed after a gust of 180 km / h. Hundreds of trees were blown over on Föhr .
In the North Sea, the strong winds led to a severe storm surge . The Danish island of Rømø was flooded. At Ribe in the Syddanmark , the tide peak at 5.33 meters was only 20 cm below the Burchardi flood of 1634 (around 5.5 m), making it - together with the equally high November flood of 1825 - the second highest flood event ever recorded in Ribe. In Hamburg , 3.90 meters above mean flood, the fourth highest water level since the record was recorded. The hurricane led to an accident on the lightship FS2 at position Elbe 1 , it then had to be scrapped and has since been replaced by a light barrel.
