Roland Kunz (born September 18, 1960 in Saarlouis ) is a German singer ( countertenor ), musician and radio host. He was the founder, keyboardist and head of the music group Orlando and the Unsaved . In 2011 he founded the Orlando Circle formation .

Life

Roland Kunz studied musicology, art history and literature in Saarbrücken . Since 1983 he has worked as a freelance presenter and program designer for ARD's cultural waves, in particular for Saarland broadcasting . He also completed vocal studies with Marius van Altena in Holland, with Karl-Heinz Jarius in Frankfurt am Main and master classes with Jochen Kowalski , David Cordier and Paul Esswood, among others . For several years he worked at the Collegium Vocale Gent under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe and in the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble under Thomas Hengelbrock . He worked with Ton Koopman and Gustav Leonhardt, among others .

In 1998, Roland Kunz founded the music group Orlando & die Unerlössten and tries to cross the boundaries between classical and modern with extraordinary projects. In doing so, he created a style that he himself calls the New Past (“NewPast”), a synonym for the combination of the baroque countertenor voice with elements from pop, jazz and other styles. Among other things, in collaboration with countertenor Andreas Scholl , symphonically arranged countertenor duets and a light symphony in performances with the Munich Radio Orchestra, Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra and German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern were created. In 2005 he set Jonction III , one of the most important paintings by the Quadriga painter Karl Otto Götz, to music . In 2010, Kunz received a commission from the Studio Franken des Bayerischen Rundfunks to compose the full-length oratorio Der Seele Ruh for soloists, choir, orchestra and band.

In 1995, Roland Kunz received the Saarlouis District Culture Prize and in 2011 the Saarlouis City Culture Prize. Also in 2011 he was nominated for the Prix ​​Europa , the most important European radio award. For 30 years, the musician and radio host has been involved in numerous projects to teach young people classical music. He analyzes and explains classical scores in large orchestral concerts entitled Music for Young Ears .
