Ornithogalum collinum is a plant from the family of asparagus plants (Asparagaceae).

description

Ornithogalum collinum is a perennial , herbaceous onion plant that reaches heights of 1 to 15 centimeters. The onion has free scales and daughter onions. The shaft is still more or less above the ground. The leaves are 2 to 5 millimeters wide and the edge is smooth, rough or ciliate. The 2 to 12-flowered (rarely up to 24-flowered) grapes are 5 to 120 millimeters in size. The lowest flower stalk is 15 to 95 millimeters in size and protrudes at an angle of 60 to 100 °. The petals are 12 to 14 (20) millimeters in size. The fruit stalks are more or less straight. The ovary has weak ridges.

The flowering period extends from March to April.

The chromosome number of both subspecies of Ornithogalum collinum is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

Ornithogalum collinum occurs in the (northeastern) Mediterranean region. The species grows on Phrygana , fallow land, olive groves and hedgehog cushion heaths at altitudes from 0 to 500 meters.

Systematics

There are two subspecies:

  • Ornithogalum collinum subsp. collinum : Based on the investigations by Franz Speta , reliable evidence is available from Italy, Sicily, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece and Crete. Information from the European part of Turkey is unsecured. The information for Spain, France, Sardinia and Corsica from Flora Europaea is not taken up in current floristic literature.
  • Ornithogalum collinum subsp. rhodium Speta : This subspecies occurs on Rhodes.
