Franz Speta

Franz Speta (born December 22, 1941 in Linz ; † December 5, 2015 ) was an Austrian botanist . His main focus was on onion plants , especially the Hyacinthaceae . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Speta ".

career

Speta worked for a teaching first as a clerk , made the Matura in night school and then studied at the University of Vienna at the Faculty of Botany and Zoology . He wrote his dissertation under Professors Lothar Geitler and Tschermak-Woess on the "development history and karyology of elaiosomes on seeds and fruits". He received his doctorate in 1972 .

From 1970 he was a research assistant at the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz , initially as head of the Botany and Evertebrates department , from 1985 as deputy director of the state museum and in 1990/91 as interim director. From 1993 to 2003 he was director of the newly established biology center of the state museum.

In 1982 he received the venia legendi for systematic botany at the University of Salzburg . In 1994 he was appointed Real Councilor .

research

The main research focus of Speta was the bulbous plants , especially the Hyacinthaceae with a focus on Scilla and Ornithogalum . Further topics are the tribe Antirrhineae of the Scrophulariaceae , as well as Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae). He has published around 100 scientific papers.

He has also published around 50 biographical works, mainly on botanists.

Honors

The plant genus Spetaea Wetschnig & Pfosser from the Hyacinthaceae family is named after Speta .
